Description
What's the story?
The game has a simple premise: you are the son of Hades (Zagreus) and you are taking a break from the bowels of hell to the top of Mount Olympus, hoping to discover more about your mother. Olympus is, of course, where all your aunts and uncles hang out, and some of them will help you on your quest, but even this pious help won't prevent you from dying often.Non-god characters worth special mention are Sisyphus: the one with the endless rock, Patroclus, Hercules' friend, and Eurydice, Orpheus' late wife who almost made it out of the underworld and back to her tragically cut short life.
You have a variety of weapons and powers: fast, light, or weapon attack (main weapon), special attack (an upgrade to your main weapon and attack), and some magic (spell which is basically a long-range weapon). You can combine power-ups, for example, the dash-attack combination gives you a spinning melee attack called "dash-attack."
The Lightness of Being
You start by playing through the same four rooms every time, but the layout and enemies within them are different each time, providing plenty of variety to keep you interested. You die a lot, especially at first, but any loot, treasure, power-ups, and skills you've upgraded stay with you, which is why the game is more a 'roguelite' rather than a roguelike, which emphasizes permadeath and the loss of all rewards.Because you are meant to die often as you explore your way through Hades, finding your way to the outside world, so you can try all the doors, explore all the paths, and try all the options. Often, completing a room (killing villains, using power-ups, finding secrets) will cause one or more doors to open, showing you the way or giving you the option of where to go next.Currency takes several forms and actually updates as you become more powerful, starting with gold obols (small coins taken from the eyes of the dead) and darkness shards, moving on to gemstones, titan blood vials, and more. The Olympian aunts and uncles give gifts that are a nod to their divine powers: Zeus inflicts lightning damage on your hit, and Dionysus provides "hangover damage," all very fitting.
The game map
Zagreus can explore the Underworld between missions, unlocking upgrades, getting new weapons, and creating new support features. After the initial four rooms, he will find himself in one of the four zones of the Underworld:Temple of StyxTartarusAsphodelElysium
If you start to find the game too easy, change the Pact of Punishment for greater difficulty and more challenging levels with harder-to-beat villains.
