Ghostrunner for PC is a hardcore slasher video game, featuring exciting cyberpunk action with animated parkour moves set in a technological dystopia where everyone must be part of a faction to survive. Poverty and violence abound and players are the heroes who use every means at their disposal to fight indifferent authorities, both in their real world and in the cyber world, with incredible tricks and careful sabotage.

What's the story?

As the game opens, calamity has already struck and the residents (survivors might be a more appropriate term) live in a carefully balanced battle against authorities who seek to hoard and control the scarce resources left, no matter what happens to the people who are then deprived of said resources.

The basic premise of the game is that you get to play, using your impressive parkour skills and weapons training, in humanity’s last city. It’s huge, grungy, but flashy in its neon-filled urban harshness, and offers plenty of surfaces, grips and escape routes for the astute traceur or traceuse (that is, someone who does parkour).

Your ultimate goal is to scale Dharma Tower and fight the current Keymaster, Mara, who is a terrible tyrant trying to cling to power at all costs. Of course, she has surrounded herself with the very best defences available, and you must fight hard to progress. But have no fear, you will be super-trained as the game progresses, and your skill level increases with the difficulty of the villains you will face.

You are not alone in your efforts, either. Zoe, a new ally, and ‘the Architect’ are your helpers and teammates, providing advice and missions for you to complete as you make your way to the heart of the tower.

Gameplay Mechanics

The game is fluid and fast, and if your character stands still, they will be caught, so it is best to keep moving around the city, finding paths at great speed from one building to the next.

It only takes one hit to kill, so there are no slow one-hit-after-another battles trying to take down a single enemy. You can hit five or six times in a row and watch a very primally satisfying kill count. Racking up a decent body count of bad guys is fine, right? In the end, they are the bad guys…

As for weapons, you have your muscles with an impressive level of athleticism, strength and your katana. Your speed also in a weapon of sorts; it is certainly a defence, as slowing down allows your enemies to catch you – a highly undesirable state of affairs.

Fun Facts: Game vs Real-life

• Monomolecular blades: your blade is monomolecular, meaning it has been sharpened so fine as to be one molecule wide at the cutting edge. This, it is said, means the blade cuts at a molecular level, slicing between molecules rather than crashing into the material. Near-monomolecular blades do exist currently, in glass and obsidian, increasingly used in surgery, to make clean cuts that do not even need anaesthesia. They are as narrow as 3 nanometres at the cutting edge, while the largest known molecule (admittedly an artificial one) is 10 nanometres across.
• Bullet dodging: you can dodge bullets in the game. Sadly, this skill is not inspired by real life: if you were far enough away to have time to react, you would not see the bullet coming, and if you were close enough to see it, it would have hit you before your eyes had even registered the movement. But you can, if you are observant and intuitive, react before enemies shoot you, giving a very worthy impression that you are bullet dodging.
• Deflecting missiles: in the game you can return missiles to their senders. This is actually possible in real life, if you can find something that will return the missile without distorting, and if you can do the calculations to find the perfect angle at which to hold your shield or deflector.
