About the Game
To understand the premise of the world, you’ll need to simultaneously project yourself forward and backward in time. Back to the 1950s to pick up its ideas of what the future would be like, and then forward to 2287, bringing with you much of the bright chrome and synthetic leather ambience of 1950s diners, juke boxes and drive-in movie theaters, and adding robotic household staff, jet packs and flying cars, among many other things.Broadly speaking, the player, as either the male or female protagonist, witnesses the murder of their spouse and the kidnapping of their infant son. After a time in cryosleep, the protagonist escapes the vault, designated as the "Sole Survivor" and sets out to find their son and take revenge for the murder of their partner.
Choose a Side, Any Side
Throughout the game, you will encounter four different factions and must choose which one you want to support.The Brotherhood of Steel: as the name implies, this faction is teeming with war-ready soldiers with a hero complex. Join them to fight synths, mutants, and ghouls: the Brotherhood's goal is to eradicate all these beings from the face of the Earth. They are also anti-modern technology, gathering and hoarding early technology to save the city from corrupting influences. Definitely a faction for those who like to shoot things without first worrying about moral sensibilities!The Railroad: This faction deals with issues of artificial intelligence and machine learning and is concerned with freeing androids. The Railroad works to save androids from mistreatment, particularly from their sworn enemy, the Institute (see below for why), and as such, they have to work in secret, from a secret location, operating in the shadows and stealthily. This means that your quest to join them begins with finding their secret base, and once you find them, you have to pass a test to be admitted to their ranks!The Minutemen: The equivalent of home guards, the Minutemen seek to maintain the status quo, keep out strangers, and avoid too much drama and conflict. If you don't actively choose a side by picking one of the other three factions, you might end up being a Minuteman by default, almost, just because of how the game unfolds. After a massacre that decimated their numbers, the Minutemen are happy to accept help from anyone willing to lend a hand.The Institute: This shadowy group extends its malicious influence into the early hours of the game, but players won't encounter it until later.
